我曾經這樣走過來的...

I've been recently reading a Swiss-cultural introduction book, Beyond Chocolate, written by a Scottish lady who married a Swiss.   The more I'm processing this book, the more I'm feeling like one of the characters in it.   Somehow, we, foreign brides, have the same experiences to travel this far for love, try to adapt Swiss culture and learn what it's so-called "Swiss-German" (for those of us who reside in German-speaking part of Switzerland) although we may not end up to know each other.   Our stories may be somewhat bitter and/or sweet, but we then manage to find our space or community to be comfortable with.

Here I dedicate my story to you all and…to those of us who may have been experiencing cultural shock, not matter where you are, you are not alone~

Beyond Chocolate                        ~An English poem by Emma~

Beyond chocolate, I was trying to find a place called Home.
But when the dawn came, I’d like to hide myself in a dorm.
Being side of Swiss people, I found myself being dumb.
Somehow, I just wanted to be wrapped up in husband’s arm.
That was where I could temporarily calm myself down.

From time to time, I asked myself where exactly I belonged to.
I felt like landing in the air as if plants grow without roots.
Husband kept asking me “Was kann ich für dich tun?”(English: What can I do for you?)
After travelling this far for love, family and friends back home miss me, too.

Behind cheese fondue, local may not know much about other side of the world.
Introducing myself, “Formosa” is how my mother-land was called.
Issues about politics, they know Taiwan and China are never good friends at all.
But “Chinesisches Taipei” is what Swiss official knows.

Inside cheesy head, some people look at me as a stranger.
Coating with different skin color, one local called me street-walker.
Having high education, locals somehow dont' really care.
What I can do is trying to be part of theirs.
Changing big environment doesn't seem to be easier,
Shutting my ears off makes me feel so much better.

Walking out of my ivory tower, I find myself in love with Swiss culture.
Smelling stinky “cow dung” air, I enjoy beautiful and fresh nature.
Grateful to have nice and friendly neighbours,
plus husband’s famlity and friends as supporters.
I feel comfortable no longer as an outsider.

Life is challenging, I manage hard to make it working.
Races are not much different if you look closely in.
Respect and care to all are absolutely worth doing.

Settling down in Heide-land, problems are still the same.
Thinking positive will make me win the life game.
Looking back the past, I lose nothing but gain.

This poem represents my personal feelling and experiences in the first half year when I just settled down in Swizterland.   Being a foreign bride, I have met very interesting people and experienced a lot cultural diversities.   For sure, life isn’t positive at all times and you may recognize the down side in my poem.   It's been close to two years staying in here.   After all, I find my strength and manage to resolve most of the issues.   In another word, my poem isn’t meant to imply the overall situation one will definitely encounter in Switzerland.   Thanks a lot for your understanding~

Emma
